THE TRUE FRIEND IS ALLAH WHO WANTS ALL GOODNESS FOR HIS SERVANTS

Allah provided numerous blessings for his servants and created this life on earth as a trial stage for them. Every provision they will need, and like, had been prepared for them way before human beings were even created. The air they breathe, the birds that fly in the sky (each one more beautiful than the other), the plants that grow so pretty and in countless diversity, the flowers that bloom which are extremely aesthetic, unique blessings, the people they love, the most beautiful and cutest creatures that generate extreme excitement in the heart, a flawless balance system, and many more detailed creatures, were created by Allah for Himself.

Humans find everything that they need as ready when they come to life. They are all endowed with great comfort. Everything is proper to its own sizes and life conditions. Fruits, food, and the whole world, with the every single detail, are completely suitable for the life conditions of human beings. However, humans almost never show any effort to obtain these. They are faced with an excellent balance and harmony. All of these are created by Allah up to the tiniest details. Moreover, for the life on earth, which is in the trial stage, Allah sent a holy book via His prophets which contains everything in it to make it as a guidance for His servants. This holy book contains every issue that humans need to address and that clearly explains the ways of attaining Allah's sake: "... We have not omitted anything from the Book – then they will be gathered to their Lord.” (Surat al-An'am, 38)

Allah sent this guidance, a holy book, that distinguishes right from wrong, that depicts the behaviors which would be suitable for Allah's sake, that is full of wisdom, and which completely explains every issue that is needed to be known:

This is a Book We have sent down to you so that you can bring mankind from the darkness to the light, by the permission of their Lord, to the Path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy. (Surah Ibrahim, 1)

For humans who find everything ready with the most comprehensive details, it is their task to live their life according to the morals of the Quran and based on the orders and advices Allah gives. As a servant who is turning towards Allah, who is the real Friend and for whom He created the most beautiful details with His endless wisdom, it is important to shape his life suitable for the sake of Allah, who is his Protector. That is Allah, who is to be liked, to be remembered, to be exalted, to be trusted, to be merited, and to be turned towards as a real Friend because He bestowed everything to human beings even before humans knew these. Allah is the only Protector of those who know that Allah is the only Friend, who takes shelter in His power and strength, and who trusts His supreme wisdom and mercy.

A person who knows that everything Allah created is good, prosperous, and a revelation of a supreme wisdom, would only trust his Lord and would only take shelter in Him. Therefore, in this world that is created as a trial stage, one of the fundamental features of a believing person should be trust in Allah. Trust in Allah is a person's reliance to Allah and to accept Him as his trustee. It is the requirement of faith to have a deep trust in Allah if a Muslim recognizes that every moment and every event that he deals with is created by Allah. That is one of the most essential features of faith--to show submission to Allah who created humans when they were nothing and who surrounds humans with His blessings everywhere. There is no one else to accept as a trustee other than Allah who creates goodness with constant and endless good morals. Therefore, Allah is the only presence to have trust in for a Muslim who lives according to the morals of the Quran. Allah orders that: “And put your trust in Allah. Allah suffices as a Guardian.” (Surat al-Ahzab, 3)

THE QUR'AN: A MANIFESTATION OF ALLAH'S MERCY

The Qur’an is Allah’s generous gift to humanity, a great manifestation of His name the All Merciful, Most Merciful. The Qur’an is the main source from which people will learn about the true religion. The Qur’an is the word of Allah, Who created the universe from nothing, has perfect knowledge of everything, and has infinite mercy. The Qur’an is a blessing from our Lord:

… a revelation from the All-Merciful, the Most Merciful, a Book whose verses have been explained in detail, for people who know, as a Qur’an in Arabic. (Surah Fussilat, 2-3)

On that Day, We will raise up among every community a witness against them from among themselves and bring you as a witness against them. We have sent down the Book to you, making all things clear and as guidance and mercy and good news for the Muslims. (Surat an-Nahl, 89)

We have brought them a Book elucidating everything with knowledge, as guidance and a mercy for believers. (Surat al-A’raf, 52)

Allah, in a great manifestation of His mercy, sent down books to teach people, explain His decrees, and reveal Himself to them. Through His own words and wisdom, He showed them what they did not know. When these holy books were corrupted, He sent new messengers and revealed that the Qur’an would be protected until the Day of Judgment.

The Qur’an is Allah’s last divinely revealed book, and Allah’s protection of it is a mercy to humanity:

Nor can you say: “If the Book had been sent down to us, We would have been better guided than they were.” For a Clear Sign has come to you from your Lord, and guidance and mercy. Who could do greater wrong than someone who denies Allah’s Signs and turns away from them? We will repay those who turn away from Our Signs with the worst kind of punishment, because they turned away. (Surat al-An’am, 157)

The Qur’an’s simple and clear style enables everyone to understand its perfect wisdom. Therefore, they can learn from the Qur’an’s contents by reading and understanding the wisdom within the Qur’an concerning life in this world and the Hereafter:

“We have sent down to you a Book containing your Reminder. So, will you not use your intellect?” (Surat al-An’am, 10) and “We have not omitted anything from the Book” (Surat al-An’am, 38).

The Qur’an, which contains clear truths and is a sure guide to the straight path, reveals the truest knowledge on every truth that Allah revealed to Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). Therefore, those who live by the Qur’an and the Prophet’s sayings (hadiths) will obtain Allah’s mercy and guidance:

This Qur’an guides to the most upright Way and gives good news to the believers who do right actions that they will have a large reward. (Surat al-Isra, 9)

This is clear insight for humanity and guidance and mercy for people with certainty. (Surat al-Jathiyya, 20)

Those who choose the Qur’an and our Prophet’s way (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) will lead a life that is not like that of the unbelievers. For example, they are not anxious, discontented, fearful, worried, despairing, pessimistic, or overcome by panic in difficult situations.

They always conform to Allah’s decrees, regardless of the surrounding circumstances. Their every decision, word, and action indicates that they follow the Qur’an’s moral teachings. As a result, they always have a clear conscience and experience the ensuing spiritual contentment, well-being, and joy that Allah, in His mercy, grants those who live according to the Qur’an’s moral teachings:

O humanity! Admonition has come to you from your Lord, as well as healing for what is in the breasts and guidance, and mercy for the believers. (Surah Yunus, 57)

The Qur’an has been sent to all humanity, but it guides to the straight path only for those who fear and respect Allah and who believe in the Hereafter. It is a proof of His compassion for His sincere servants:

“Am I to desire someone other than Allah as a judge, when it is He Who has sent down the Book to you clarifying everything?” Those to whom We have given the Book know it has been sent down from your Lord with truth, so on no account be among the doubters. (Surat al-An’am, 114)

On that Day, We will raise up among every community a witness against them from among themselves, and bring you as a witness against them. We have sent down the Book to you making all things clear, and as guidance and mercy and good news for the Muslims. (Surat an-Nahl, 89)

Those are the Signs of the Wise Book. Guidance and mercy for the good-doers. (Surah Luqman, 2-3)

O humanity! Admonition has come to you from your Lord and also healing for what is in the breasts, and guidance and mercy for the believers. (Surah Yunus, 57)

Allah tells us that the Qur’an is a book of counsel for all people, a guide to the straight path for sincere believers who respect His power, and a book that contains sublime wisdom and gives true knowledge of the past and the future. Its incomparable style pierces the veil that hides the human propensity for error. Since it is eternally valid, all believers are determined to follow its decrees and the Prophet’s (May Allah bless him and grant him peace) example.

The Qur’an is Al-Furqan, the distinguisher between right and wrong, truth and falsehood: “Right guidance has become clearly distinct from error” (Surat al-Baqara, 256). Therefore, believers do not try to find a middle road between its moral teachings and a life of ignorance; they follow only the Truth: the Qur’an.

Knowing that the Qur’an manifests His name All Merciful, Most Merciful and thus proves His endless mercy toward all people, they obey Allah’s command to cling to its moral teachings:

So hold fast to what has been revealed to you. You are on a straight path. It is certainly a reminder to you and to your people, and you will be questioned. (Surat az-Zukhruf, 43-44)

THE MERCY OF ALLAH EMBRACES EVERYTHING

The word mercy comes from the Arabic rahama, meaning pity, protect, compassion and forgiveness. The name All-Merciful and Most Merciful of our Lord comes from this root. The adjective All-Merciful, which is used in the Qur’an only for Allah means “He Whose mercy embraces everything; Who wishes goodness, mercy, and beauty for all created things; Who imparts countless blessings without distinguishing who He loves from who He does not.” The adjective Most Merciful, which is also used for our Prophet (May Allah bless him and grant him in peace) (Surat at-Tawba, 128) when refers to Allah, means “He Whose mercy embraces only believers in the Hereafter, Who rewards those Who use His blessings well with greater and infinite blessings.”

The name of Allah All-Merciful and Most Merciful is repeated numerous times in other verses of the Qur’an. All the surahs in the Qur’an except Surat at-Tawba, begins with the ascription in the name of Allah, the All-Merciful and Most Merciful. The name All Merciful of our Lord has a wide range of meanings: protecting, pitying, compassionate, and merciful names of Allah are all manifestations of Allah’s name All Merciful. His mercy encompasses all things and is limitless, timeless, and eternal. Of all those who show mercy, our Lord is the Most Merciful.

In the Qur’an, Allah tells us that Job (pbuh) used this beautiful name in his prayers:

And Job, when he called out to his Lord: “Great harm has afflicted me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.” (Surat al-Anbiya, 83)

Allah the All Merciful manifests His infinite mercy in everything seen and unseen. It is possible to see the All- Merciful name of Allah in the miracles of creation pervading the universe; the creation of humans and in the billions of details in the human body; in animals, food, drink, water, and air. In short, in every aspect of the universe. The universe manifests this mercy, for only He makes countless seeds sprout from under the ground; creates fruits and vegetables, sends down rain, feeds and nourishes the infinite number of creatures inhabiting our world; and creates the oxygen that life needs to survive. Our Lord surrounds every being with countless blessings, and thus no being can prevent the appreciation, generosity, and favor He shows toward humanity. In Surah Fatir our Lord announces His infinite Mercy upon the humans as below:

Any mercy Allah opens up to people, no one can withhold; any He withholds, no one can afterwards release. He is the Almighty, the All-Wise. (Surah Fatir, 2)

Every creature living on this planet, including human beings, can survive only if numerous conditions are met every moment, such as the existence of oxygen for them to breathe in, water and food for them to sustain their ability to carry out the countless processes. Moreover billions of processes take place in the human body every second. For the continuance of life, every single cell performs its own tasks upon Allah’s will. Even one single person’s survival, meeting all his physical needs, is bound to infinite number of details. Our Lord with his endless mercy has predetermined and supplied whatever is necessary.

He created human beings and placed them in the most suitable place to live. In return, all that human beings have to do is to be His servants. One manifestation of His name All-Merciful and Most Merciful is His sending of holy books through his Messengers to enable human beings to find the true path, and Prophets to explain the verses in ways that they could understand. In this way, Allah revealed Himself and invited them to the beauties of religious morality and told them how to lead a superior moral life. All of these things are clear evidence of our Lord’s endless mercy.

The unbelievers, idolaters, and hypocrites benefit from the air, water, and all blessings that Allah has bestowed, in His endless mercy, upon humanity: property and possessions, a beautiful house and children, sustenance, health, strength, and beauty. These are all manifestations of Allah’s infinite mercy. He does so in order to draw all people toward His religion and so that they will think reasonably and thank Him. Those who, nevertheless, continue to reject Allah will find that these blessings will only increase their misery. Those who turn away from Allah will enjoy these blessings throughout this short and temporary earthly life, while in the Hereafter, all of these blessings will belong to the believers who strove to draw near to Allah, earn His favor, and thanked Him without pause. Allah is eternal Justice and has announced the good news of Paradise, adorned with incomparable blessings, to the believers:

“Prescribe good for us in this world and the Hereafter. We have truly turned to You.” He said: “As for My punishment, I strike with it anyone I will. My mercy extends to all things, but I will prescribe it for those who guard against evil and give alms, and those who believe in Our Signs. (Surat al-A’raf, 156)

… Gardens of Eden, which the All-Merciful has promised to His servants in the Unseen. His promise is always kept. (Surah Maryam, 61)

ALLAH IS THE CREATOR OF ALL

Our Lord is the One Who has put billions of pieces of information in a place so small that our eyes cannot even see it.

Allah is the One Who has created us, our eyes, our hair, and our feet.

He is also the Creator of our families, parents, brothers and sisters, friends and teachers.

Allah is the One Who has created the food that we love for us, chocolates, cakes and candies, the fruits and vegetables that make us healthy and strong. If Allah had not created it, we would not have known what chocolate tasted like.

Allah has also given us the sense of taste and smell. If He had not given us these faculties, we would not have been able to taste the things that we eat. It would have been the same whether we ate a potato or a cake. Allah hasn't just created delicious and beautifully scented foods, He has also given us the faculties that will allow us to enjoy them.

You like some things, and you enjoy them and think of them as fun. It could be a dessert that you enjoy eating, a game that you enjoy playing, or an outing with people you love. You must never forget that Allah is the One Who makes it possible for you to enjoy such things.

Since Allah has great mercy for you, He always gives you pleasant and beautiful things.

To begin with, you did not exist. Just think, you were nowhere before you were conceived. You were nothing. Allah created you. He made you out of nothing.

Then we must be grateful to Allah for each moment of our lives. In everything that we enjoy and love, we must remember Allah, and say, "O Allah I am forever grateful to you for all your offerings." If we come across a situation that we do not like, we should again pray to Allah, because He is the only One Who can put things right.

Allah always hears our prayers and responds to them, because He always knows what is in our thoughts. While reading this section, for instance, you are thinking of some things, but if you do not say them aloud, no one at home will know what you are thinking. Allah, however, knows your every thought and sees you all the time. Even when you think you are alone, Allah sees you and knows everything that you do.

For this reason, good people, even when they are by themselves, do not think, "Well no one can see me now" and then do wrong things. They know that Allah still sees and hears them even when no one else is around.

THE DESIGN IN BIRD FEATHERS

At first glance, bird feathers seem to have a very simple structure. When we study them closer, however, we come across the very complex structure of feathers that are light yet extremely strong and waterproof.
Birds should be as light as possible in order to fly easily. The feathers are made up of keratin proteins keeping with this need. On both sides of the stem of a feather are veins and on each vein are around 400 tiny barbs. On these 400 barbs are a total of tinier 800 barbs, two on each. Of the 800 tinier barbs which are crowded on a small bird feather, those located towards the front part have another 20 barbs on each of them.

These barbs fasten two feathers to one another just like two pieces of cloth tacked up on each other. In a single feather are approximately 300 million tiny barbs. The total number of barbs in all the feathers of a bird is around 700 billion.

There is a very significant reason for the bird feather being firmly interlocked with each other with barbs and clasps. The feathers should hold tightly on the bird so as not to fall out in any movement whatsoever. With the mechanism made up of barbs and clasps, the feathers hold so tightly on the bird that neither strong wind, nor rain, nor snow cause them to fall out.

Furthermore, the feathers in the abdomen of the bird are not the same as the feathers in its wings and tail. The tail is made up of relatively big feathers to function as rudder and brakes; wing feathers are designed so as to expand the area surface during the bird's wing beating and thus increase the lifting force.

...Allah did not create the heavens and the earth and everything between them except with truth and for a fixed term...(Surat ar-Rum, 8)

ALLAH IS ALL-POWERFUL

For many years, people have wondered how the universe will end. Many possibilities spring to mind, but Allah can make it happen without a cause and all of a sudden. The probabilities revealed by scientific research constitute a warning and give us the opportunity to reflect and turn to Allah before that difficult Day comes in accordance with His will. The believers are certain that the Day of Judgment will happen at the predetermined time in His presence. All people will experience it, for they will be in the All-Powerful's grip, as follows:

Or let you see what We have promised them. They are completely in Our power. (Surat az-Zukhruf, 42)

Many events can cause Earth's existing order to collapse and all life to be lost. Furthermore, as time progresses, even more probable causes are added to the already existing ones. Many signs indicate that our world is moving rapidly toward its predetermined end, even if most people deny the existence of the Day of Judgment. The Qur'an points out this reality in the following verse:

The Hour is coming, but I have concealed it so that every self can be repaid for its efforts. (Surah Ta Ha, 15)

Scientists have reached a consensus, based on scientific data, that the universe will be destroyed. Newspapers, magazines, television programs, and other media outlets often inform people of the latest scientific discoveries. Researchers who are aware of these facts are looking for ways to prevent such calamities in order to delay the universe's death. Another area of research focuses on the probable changes that would take place on Earth and its effects on life were such a disaster to strike. The resulting data bears a striking resemblance to many of the events foretold in the Qur'an.

CREATION FROM HOT SMOKE

Scientists today are able to observe the formation of stars from a hot gas cloud. Formation from a warm mass of gas also applies to the creation of the universe. The creation of the universe as described in the Qur'an confirms this scientific discovery in the following verse:

He placed firmly embedded mountains on it, towering over it, and blessed it and measured out its nourishment in it, laid out for those who seek it-all in four days. Then He turned to heaven when it was smoke and said to it and to the Earth, "Come willingly or unwillingly." They both said, "We come willingly." (Surah Fussilat, 10-11)

The Arabic word for "samaa'," translated here as "heaven," refers to the entire universe. The word "dukhaanun" for "smoke" describes the matter before the universe took its shape-the hot, cosmic smoke present during the creation of the universe, as now acknowledged by scientist.5 This word in the Qur'an, in pinpoint fashion, describes this smoke very accurately for it is a warm body of gas containing mobile particles connected to solid substances. Here, the Qur'an has employed the most appropriate word from the Arabic language for describing the appearance of this phase of the universe. Let us note that only in the 20th century have scientists discovered that the universe emerged from a hot gas in the form of smoke.

In addition, the word "thumma," translated as "then" in the expression "Then He turned to heaven when it was smoke," bears other meanings such as "at this, in addition, furthermore, moreover, again, once more." Here, "thumma" is employed not as an expression of time, but as an additional clarification.*

The fact that such information about the creation of the universe is given in the Qur'an is nothing short of a miracle of the Qur'an.

CHANCE IS NOT A DEITY: IT IS GOD WHO IS THE CREATOR OF ALL THAT EXISTS

            The feather of a peacock

The theory of evolution, as proposed by Charles Darwin in the 19th century, is one of the most unbelievable and irrational claims in history. Despite this, over its 150-year history it's been accepted by many scientists, professors, doctors and researchers, and many others who have expended great effort to defend evolution to the point of accepting its scientific contradictions.

This theory puts forth the irrational claim that all plants, animals and human beings are the result of blind, unconscious, accidental events. Evolutionists believe that millions of years ago, in the primal soup of the oceans or in pools of water, mindless atoms with no knowledge, powers of reason came together in certain proportions and later, by chance, formed the proteins and cells that even today's scientists with the most advanced laboratory technology have not been able to duplicate. They go so far as to say that these cells, in their turn-and again by sheer chance-formed starfish, fish, sparrows, hawks, seagulls, penguins, cats, lambs, lions, and even human beings who possess the faculty of reason.

(Left) A peacock feather, (Right) The hide of a zebra

To demonstrate just how incredible the claims of evolutionists are, let anyone who believes in the creative power of chance events take a large barrel. Let them put into it however much material they believe is required to form a living thing. For example, let them include all the needed elements-carbon, phosphorus, calcium-as well as organic compounds like amino acids, proteins, lipids, and carotene. Then let them add to this mixture whatever outside influence they choose. For example, heat or chill the barrel. Let it be struck by lightning or apply electric current. Let them stir the mixture with whatever advanced devices they may have. In addition, let them stand guard on this barrel transferring this responsibility from father to son for millions, even billions, of years. And so as to increase the chances of success, let them control the mixing at every moment. Let them consult with others;meet with the world's foremost biologists, geneticists, physicists and experts on evolution. Leave them free to produce whatever conditions they deem necessary to originate life.

Yet despite all this serious, conscious effort, they'll never be able to produce anything like a living being in that barrel. No matter what they do, they'll never be able to produce the living things pictured in this book.

According to Materialist-Darwinists, time is the only thing that chance needs to bring about extraordinary events. This warped logic claims that, if given time, chance can transform a mass of inert, unconscious atoms into-for example-a fig, olive, strawberry, orange, peach, tomato, pomegranate, melon, banana, violet, tulip, orchid, or rose; into ants, butterflies, peacocks, horses, giraffes, and human beings, or any of a million other things you may not think of.

Let those atoms in that barrel perform any reactions they want; never will they begin an "evolution" capable of producing brilliant scientists like Einstein and Newton able to solve complex problems; artists like Michelangelo and Picasso able to create masterpieces; musicians like Beethoven and Mozart able to compose melodies to delight the human spirit; discoverers;scientists able to examine under electron microscopes the molecules and atoms out of which they themselves are composed; talented actors like Humphrey Bogart and Charlton Heston; celebrities like Steve Martin, Bon Jovi and Sting. Or consider the many artists; those who take pleasure in symmetry, esthetics and harmonious colors; those able to design automobiles and write books; thinkers with faculties of logic and judgment;human beings able to retain in memory what they have learned, share longings, feel excitement and pleasure;who are possessed with a sense of love, mercy and compassion; who enjoy the taste of food and whose appetite is stimulated by a cake baking in the oven; who laugh at something funny and enjoy being with their friends; who can defend an idea and carry on a discussion.

Bring unconscious atoms together in whatever way you prefer. Never will they be able to bring about a single one of these living things, or even one of their cells.

If so-if no living thing can ever be produced by human effort and the whole pool of human knowledge-how can life be brought into being with the aid of unconscious atoms and chance events? Any intelligent human being of conscience can certainly understand that he-and other living things-cannot be the result of chance events. Every intelligent, unprejudiced person with a conscience knows that God has created all these living things with His incomparable power.

Regrettably, a segment of the population has accepted this irrational scenario throughout the 20th century. Professors, scientists and teachers may ridicule the "primitive" beliefs of pagan societies, while themselves accepting the nonsense of evolution. In this, they're equally as benighted as those human beings who expect a wooden idol can help them. God's Messenger, he Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him, also reminded anyone afflicted with such blindness that the greatest sin is associating His creatures with God:

The most severe sin is to associate partners with God, while He has created you.

In the Qur'an (29:17), God warns those who worship idols and invent lies about them that their power is strong enough to do anything.

Instead of God, you worship only idols. You are inventing a lie. Those you worship besides God have no power to provide for you. So seek your provision from God and worship Him and give thanks to Him. It is to Him you will be returned. (Surat Al-‘Ankabut, 17)

GOD'S GENTLE ARTISTRY

Almost every newborn creature is weak and helpless, unaware of the dangers that surround it. It is very unlikely that it could survive and grow on its own. From the moment it is born it will always have adults nearby to feed it, protect it from danger and, if necessary, sacrifice their own lives for it.

Young animals can survive only if they are looked after by strong grown-ups. A gazelle abandoned at birth or bird's eggs left uncared for have no chance of survival. But young animals usually can survive because they have careful parents who do not neglect their responsibilities, even before their young are still in the egg or the womb. Many creatures go to a lot of trouble to protect their eggs, hiding them where they will not get broken, keeping them warm and when necessary, protecting them from too much heat. They will guard over their eggs for weeks and even carry them around in their mouths without harming them in any way.

But why do these creatures work so tirelessly on behalf of their young? Why don't they leave them on their own, instead of dutifully attending to all their needs? Do they do so consciously? For example, is it reasonable to think that a bird can be consciously determined to risk its own death to protect its young? Of course not! An animal cannot possess such feelings of tenderness and compassion on its own. The plain fact is that God has inspired in these creatures a wondrous sense of tenderness and parental love. And one of creation's greatest wonders is the self-sacrifice of parents for their babies.

Another wonder is how cute all young animals are. Babies of most species usually have big eyes and round faces; and an expression that we humans interpret as innocent, helpless, and bewildered. Also, their behavior makes them loveable and awakens in us the instinct to protect them.

These qualities in young animals are manifestations of God's gentle artistry (gentle in this sense also includes the ideas of "lovable," "friendly," "tame" and "docile"). As with everything else in the universe, these animals are submissive to God, as He reveals to us in the following verse:

… when everything in the heavens and Earth, willingly or unwillingly, submits to Him and to Him you will be returned... (Surah Al ‘Imran, 83)

PONDERING ON THE SIGN OF GOD

In the Qur'an, it is stated that the unbeliever is one who neither recognizes nor appreciates the signs of God. The distinguishing mark of a believer is his ability to see those signs and proofs. He knows that these are not created in vain, and can realize the power and great art of God everywhere and find ways to revere Him. He is one of those men of sense, who "celebrate the praises of God, standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and contemplate the (wonders of) creation in the heavens and the earth, (and say): 'Our Lord! not for naught have You created (all) this! Glory be to You! Give us salvation from the penalty of the Fire.' " (Surat Al'Imran 3:191)

At various points in the Qur'an, expressions like, "will you not take heed?", "...there is a sign for thinking men," lay stress on the importance of pondering upon the signs of God. God has created an endless list of subjects for reflection. Everything we see and sense in the heavens and on the earth and in between is indeed a manifestation of God's creativity and, as such should be food for thought. One of the verses gives the example of these divine blessing of God:

"With it He produces for you corn, olives, date palms, grapes and every kind of fruit: verily, in this is a sign for those who give thought." (Surat an-Nahl, 16:11)

Let us think for a moment of one of the above mentioned items: the date palm. The tree, as is well known, grows up from a seed out of the earth. From this tiny seed (a seed is not even 1 cubic centimetre in size), arises an enormous wooden mass of 4-5 metres long and hundreds of kilograms in weight. The only thing that the seed can use while constituting this great mass is the earth in which it is buried.

How can a seed know how to form a tree? How can it "reason" to decompose the necessary substances in the soil to create wood? How can it predict the required shape and structure? This last question is especially important, because it is not an ordinary wooden piece that emerges from the seed. It is a complex living organism with roots for assimilating substances from the earth, with veins and with branches that are perfectly organized. A human being has difficulty in drawing even a picture of a tree, while on the contrary a simple seed can produce such an extremely complex object by merely using the substances in the soil.

This observation concludes that a seed is extremely intelligent and wise, even more so than we are. Or to be more precise, there is an amazing intelligence in what a seed does. But what is the source of that intelligence? How can it be possible for a seed to have such intelligence and memory?

No doubt, this question has a single answer: the seed is created by being endowed with the ability to form a tree, that is, it is programmed so in advance. Every seed on earth is encompassed by God and grows within His knowledge. In one of the verses it is stated:

"With Him are the keys of the unseen, the treasures that none knows but He. He knows whatever there is on the earth and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but with His knowledge: there is not a grain in the darkness (or depths) of the earth, nor anything fresh or dry (green or withered), but is (inscribed) in a record clear." (Surat al-An'am, 6:59)

It is God Who creates the seed and causes it to spring forth as a new plant. In another verse it is said:

"It is God Who causes the seed-grain and the date-stone to split and sprout. He causes the living to issue from the dead, and He is the one to cause the dead to issue from the living. That is God: then how are you deluded away from the truth?" (Surat al-An'am, 6:95)

The seed is merely one of the numerous signs that God has created in the universe. If men begin to think not only with their minds but also with their hearts, and ask of themselves, the questions "why" and "how", they will be able to understand that entire universe is the proof of the existence and power of God.
